The National Quantum Laboratory at Maryland (QLab), located in the Discovery District—the innovation hub home to IonQ and other leading quantum initiatives—has appointed Norbert Linke, Ph.D., as its new director, effective September 1, 2025. A renowned expert in quantum computing and networking, Linke previously served as a UMD faculty member and co-invented key patents that helped launch IonQ, headquartered in the Discovery District.
Maryland is poised to lead the next wave of innovation by harnessing its strengths in AI, quantum computing, and data science. With two University-Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs), a highly skilled STEM workforce, and a thriving research ecosystem, the state is well-positioned to convert cutting-edge discoveries into private-sector growth.
At the heart of this transformation is the Discovery District, the University of Maryland’s dynamic research park, where startups, federal agencies, and industry leaders collaborate to drive technological advancements.
Four University of Maryland researchers have been honored with the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, exemplifying UMD’s leadership as the "Capital of Quantum." Quantum researchers Zohreh Davoudi and Justyna Zwolak are advancing the frontiers of innovation: Davoudi explores the formation of matter through groundbreaking quantum simulations, while Zwolak harnesses machine learning to automate and optimize quantum computing experiments.
The University of Maryland’s Dingman-Lamone Center for Entrepreneurship, recently renamed in honor of Rudy Lamone, has long been at the forefront of cultivating innovation. A $3.8M gift from Linda Lamone has enhanced the center’s endowment, bolstering programs that include Pitch Dingman, the Terp Startup Accelerator, and Dingman Center Angels—the largest university-run angel investor network in the country. The center’s year-round initiatives help launch 50-100 ventures annually, contributing to thousands of new businesses and fostering entrepreneurial talent.
IonQ, a valued member of the Discovery District, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Busan Metropolitan City, Korea's second-largest city and a vital technology and economic hub. This collaboration aims to accelerate quantum science and technology development in South Korea.

In a transformative move for Maryland and the quantum industry, the State of Maryland and the University of Maryland have announced a $1 billion "Capital of Quantum" initiative to position the region as a global leader in quantum technology.
Key Highlights of the Initiative:
Anchor Partnership with IonQ: IonQ will establish a 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art quantum intelligence campus in the Discovery District at the University of Maryland, which will include a data center, labs, and offices.
Job Creation: IonQ plans to double its Maryland workforce to 250 employees over the next five years, creating diverse, high-paying roles in fields like construction, engineering, and applied physics.
Quantum Workforce Development: Collaboration between IonQ and the University of Maryland will include creating quantum-focused educational resources for high school students across Maryland.
Innovation Hub: The initiative will support cutting-edge research, including quantum networking and secure Quantum Internet development.
Governor Wes Moore, alongside University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines and IonQ President and CEO Peter Chapman, recently unveiled the Capital of Quantum initiative, a strategic public-private partnership designed to position Maryland and the D.C. region as a global leader in quantum information science and technology. The initiative is set to drive more than $1 billion in investments over the next five years, which will include state funds, federal grants, private-sector contributions, and philanthropic support.

IonQ has unveiled a groundbreaking $21.1 million project with the United States Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to advance secure quantum networking capabilities. This collaboration will focus on installing quantum network infrastructure at the Innovare Advancement Center in Rome, New York, with goals that include:
Developing high-performance access points to enhance interoperability between quantum computers and networked devices.
Delivering networking hardware compatible with existing telecommunication infrastructure.
Establishing free-space optical links from ground stations to uncrewed aerial systems (UASs), leveraging IonQ's recent Qubitekk acquisition.
This project builds on IonQ’s recent momentum, including a $54.5 million contract with AFRL in 2024 and innovations in blind quantum computing with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS).

Frances Tiafoe, a rising star in the tennis world and a product of the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) located in the Discovery District, has signed a groundbreaking apparel sponsorship deal with Lululemon. Tiafoe made his debut in the brand’s tennis line at the 2025 Australian Open, showcasing a custom kit in "passionate pink."
IonQ is set to participate in CES 2025, a historic moment as the event launches its inaugural IonQ's participation in the first ever quantum-focused track at CES 2025, "Quantum Means Business: A Quantum World Congress Program," highlights their leadership in the quantum computing field. Their CMO, Margaret Arakawa, will be a speaker on the "Quantum is Here: Computing Applications & New Industries" panel on January 9th to discuss how quantum technology is driving innovation across various industries. The Purple Line is steadily taking shape with the installation of new transit shelters around College Park, signaling progress for the highly anticipated light-rail project. Key locations within the Discovery District including the College Park Metro station and University of Maryland campus, now feature modern glass-roofed shelters for riders. Public art is also being incorporated into the new stops, with sculptures and colorful glass panels bringing creativity to spaces like the Atworth apartment building and Campus Drive. At the University of Maryland, innovation doesn’t just stay in the lab - it transforms industries. Former UMD tight end Matt Furstenburg saw a need for more durable and long-lasting football gloves. His search for a solution led him to UMD chemical engineers, who were developing a polymer derived from shrimp and crab shells for medical applications. Originally designed as a wound-healing gel, this breakthrough material became the foundation for Grip Boost, a company Furstenburg co-founded to enhance grip in sports gloves. This collaboration exemplifies UMD’s pioneering research and turning discoveries into real-world solutions.
